NASA and international scientists to study human metabolism in microgravity

In a historic step for medical science and space research, scientists are set to conduct the first-ever study on blood sugar regulation and insulin response in space. The research, to be launched aboard the upcoming space mission, will examine how microgravity affects glucose metabolism in the human body.

This unprecedented study aims to deepen our understanding of diabetes and other metabolic disorders by observing how insulin functions without the influence of Earth’s gravity. Researchers believe the data could offer new insights into the development of insulin resistance and help advance diabetes treatment on Earth.

The experiment will be carried out with the help of astronaut volunteers aboard the International Space Station (ISS), using continuous glucose monitors and lab-on-chip devices. It is part of a broader initiative to study long-term human health in space, especially as missions to Mars and beyond are being planned.

NASA officials say the findings could also help in managing astronaut health during extended missions, as changes in metabolism can impact physical performance and mission safety.
