The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has released a fresh module on the Partition of India, highlighting the complexities of the event rather than attributing responsibility to any single individual.
The module underscores three key factors that led to the Partition: Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s demand for a separate nation, the Congress leadership’s eventual consent, and Lord Mountbatten’s haste in carrying out the boundary demarcation process. It stresses that the division was a result of multiple forces working simultaneously.
Interestingly, the text notes that even Jinnah himself had not foreseen such a swift and chaotic Partition. The module also introduces the observance of “Vibhishika Smriti Diwas”, a memorial day to acknowledge and remember the trauma, displacement, and immense human suffering that accompanied the Partition of 1947.
By weaving together political, social, and humanitarian perspectives, the NCERT seeks to provide students with a more balanced and empathetic understanding of one of the most defining moments in India’s history.
