Delhi University (DU) has received a record-breaking 2.39 lakh completed applications in the second phase of undergraduate admissions for the academic year 2025-26, according to official data released by the university on Tuesday.
Applications were submitted for 71,642 seats offered across 79 programmes in 69 colleges and departments. DU Registrar Vikas Gupta informed that out of the total applicants, 1.27 lakh were female (53.06%), 1.12 lakh were male (49.63%), and three transgender candidates also participated in the second phase, which concluded at midnight on Monday.
Although a total of 3.05 lakh candidates registered, 2.39 lakh completed the application process — the highest ever. Officials attributed this surge to several factors including “multiple reasons such as reform in admission process and personal preferences.”
In this second phase, candidates submitted their preferred combinations of courses and colleges. Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) emerged as the most sought-after institution, with 48,336 candidates listing it as their first preference. It was followed by St. Stephen’s College (15,902), Hindu College (15,902), Miranda House (11,403), and B.Com (Honours) programme, which drew significant interest.
Other highly preferred courses included BA (Honours) in Political Science (15,295), B.Sc (Honours) Zoology (12,722), and B.Com (8,939).
Candidates were allowed to select multiple course-college combinations, leading to over 1.68 crore total preferences submitted. The university also released simulated ranks on candidates’ dashboards to help them adjust or reorder their preferences. However, DU clarified that these ranks are tentative and should not be seen as final or guaranteed.
A majority of the applicants—about 58.89%—opted for humanities-related courses. Commerce programmes drew 20.89% of the applicants, while 20.22% chose science streams.
As in previous years, DU has also provided supernumerary quotas for specific categories. A total of 512 students have applied under the orphan quota, and 7,243 under the single girl child quota. Trials for extracurricular activities are scheduled to begin on July 18, while sports quota trials will commence on July 25.
The first merit list is expected to be announced on July 19.
