The Union Public Service Commission has released the official notification for the Combined Medical Services (CMS) Examination 2026, announcing a total of 1358 vacancies for various medical posts under the central government. This recruitment drive is one of the most significant opportunities for MBBS graduates seeking stable and prestigious government jobs in the healthcare sector.
According to the notification, the vacancies are distributed across multiple departments. A major share of posts is available under the Central Health Services, followed by positions in the Indian Railways as Assistant Divisional Medical Officers. Additional vacancies have been announced for General Duty Medical Officers in municipal bodies such as NDMC and MCD. These roles play a crucial part in strengthening public healthcare delivery across the country.
The application process began on 11 March 2026, and candidates can submit their applications online through the official UPSC portal until 31 March 2026. The written examination is scheduled to be conducted on 2 August 2026, giving aspirants sufficient time to prepare for the competitive selection process.
To be eligible for the CMS examination, candidates must possess an MBBS degree, although final-year students awaiting results are also eligible to apply under certain conditions. The age limit is generally capped at 32 years, with relaxation provided for reserved categories as per government norms.
The selection process consists of two stages: a computer-based written examination followed by a personality test or interview. Candidates who successfully clear both stages will be appointed to various medical officer posts across government institutions.
This recruitment is particularly important as it not only provides employment opportunities to medical graduates but also contributes to strengthening India’s public healthcare system. With increasing demand for qualified doctors in government services, the UPSC CMS exam continues to be a preferred career pathway for many young medical professionals.
Interested candidates are advised to carefully read the official notification and complete their application process well before the deadline to avoid last-minute issues.
