OpenAI has launched a new “Study Mode” in ChatGPT, now available in India for free, aimed at helping students learn actively rather than simply getting answers. Rolled out globally on July 29, 2025, the feature is accessible to users on Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans, with ChatGPT Edu access expected in the coming weeks. In India, it comes with support for 11 Indian languages and allows voice, image, and text inputs, making it more inclusive for both urban and rural learners.

Study Mode works like a personal tutor, guiding students step‑by‑step through topics using Socratic questioning, hints, scaffolded explanations, and quizzes. Instead of handing out direct answers, it encourages critical thinking and self‑reflection, helping students strengthen their understanding of subjects. Users can activate it by selecting the “Study and learn” option from ChatGPT’s tools menu, after which the AI tailors the session based on the student’s topic, goal, and skill level.

Developed in collaboration with teachers, scientists, and learning experts, the feature is designed to promote academic integrity and discourage misuse of AI for cheating. Early reviews describe it as an interactive, tutor‑like experience, particularly helpful for homework help, exam preparation, and mastering complex concepts. OpenAI’s move is seen as part of a broader push to make AI a meaningful educational tool, with the potential to reshape how students in India and around the world engage with learning in the digital age.
